Mulch isn't just cosmetic. A proper 2-to-3-inch layer holds soil moisture through our hot Piedmont summers, suppresses weeds before they start, and protects roots from temperature swings. Too thin does nothing; piled too deep — especially against trunks and stems — it does real harm. We install it right.
Before the first bag is spread, we prep: clearing weeds and debris from the beds and re-cutting a clean spade edge that separates bed from turf. That crisp line is what makes the whole property look maintained.
Most beds want a refresh once a year, typically in spring. We'll match mulch type and color to what's already there, or help you pick something new.

Two to three inches after settling. Less than that won't suppress weeds or hold moisture; more than that can suffocate roots and invite pests. We also keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and plant stems.
Once a year keeps beds looking sharp and working properly — spring is the most popular time. Some properties stretch to every other year with a lighter top-up between.
Usually a top-up over the old layer is right, as long as total depth stays in range. If the old layer is matted or too deep, we'll remove some first — we check before we spread.
Standard options include double-shredded hardwood and dyed mulches (brown, black, red). Tell us the look you want and we'll quote it.
